MSc in Computer Studies
Σε συνεργασία με: University of Hertfordshire

Περιγραφή Προγράμματος

IST and the University of Hertfordshire continuing their successful academic partnership, jointly offer a postgraduate programme MSc in Computer Science. Exactly the same programme is delivered in England with great success.
This programme is a conversion MSc in Computer Science. It offers honours graduates of other disciplines, or those with equivalent qualifications, an opportunity to develop practical skills built upon a sound understanding of the principles and theory of computer science.

The programme is designed to provide the graduates with the skills and knowledge they will need as they search for a successful scientific or professional career.

Nowadays, the demands of Information Systems (IS) development are not the same as they were in the past. The 1960's, with their data processing requirements for Accounts Departments, Wages Offices and Stock Control, have given way to the Information Age. The new information needs, the current information technologies and the emergence of Internet have recast the role of information systems in companies and organisations. Application areas are more elaborate than in the past and they have led to the establishment of new services and products such as:

Management Information Systems
Decision Support System
Executive Information Systems
Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP)
Electronic Commerce
Electronic Business
Strategic Information Systems
Knowledge Based Systems
Object oriented Languages and Databases
Hypermedia Databases
Data warehouses
Enterprise Networking

At the same time, the possibilities offered by modern technology of communications have established the use of the internet in business deals and advertising resulting in the spread of e-commerce.

Furthermore, the ability to collect and record huge volumes of data has led to new ways of accessing and managing the "relevant" information through Data Warehouse Systems, and Data Mining Systems.

Considering all the above aspects, companies and organisations are looking for people who have:

Undergone thorough scientific training and developed substantial professional skills
Excellent knowledge of modern Information Technology
Experience of modern methodologies of analysis, design and development of Information Systems
Ability to develop high-quality software
The MSc in Computer Science is designed to meet all these demands, and is also powerfully enriched with elements of modern technology. Hence it covers the needs of the Information Technology Market in the best possible way, without moving away from its original scientific character.

After completing the programme, graduates will have demonstrable skills in:

Producing high-quality software to meet the needs of all kinds of applications
Designing and implementing a great variety of applications which in theory cover any kind of Information Technology needs
Information Science and Technology is used nowadays by all other sciences and it supports all forms of business activities. The everyday activities of businesses and organisations are indeed dependent on Information Technology. It has been proved in practice that successful design and implementation of information systems can be the greatest comparative advantage for any modern company.

Bearing in mind the difficulties which exist worldwide in maintaining stable working conditions, the conversion course offered as part of our postgraduate programme helps graduates to secure employment and provides them with prospects for substantial development. With conversion courses which concern sectors involving the application of new technologies, such as Information Technology and Computer Communications, it is certain that graduates will have substantial comparative advantages in both the professional and the scientific world.

As a result, those who hold postgraduate awards for studies in these fields will obviously surpass other candidates as far as the demands of specialised jobs are concerned.

In general, the sectors, which seek candidates with the qualities that graduates of the course will possess, are:

Software development companies
Information Technology departments in companies and other organisations
Commercial companies
Insurance companies and transport companies
Telecommunications companies
Maritime companies
Stockbroking companies
Tourist companies
Radio and TV companies and the Press
Health Services
Scientific Applications and Development Departments

Additionally, graduates have the opportunity to occupy certain posts in computing services with success. These posts are very important and of great demand in the market. More specifically, graduates possess a range of qualifications, which enable them to work in the following areas, among others:

Systems Analysis
Database Design
Software Design and Development
Data Communication and Network Management
Internet Applications

Κριτήρια Εισαγωγής

The programme is aimed at University and Technological Institute graduates either in Greece or overseas who are not Information Technology graduates.

Even though some students might already have experience in using computer systems and programming, such experience is not a prerequisite for enrolment on the programme.
