L L M in Maritime Law

Περιγραφή Προγράμματος

The overriding aim for all awards in the course is to provide a general business legal education with particular emphasis on legal issues that affect modern shipping and transport businesses on their day-to-day activities. The course is designed for students and professionals, who wish to become familiar with legal aspects of the shipping and transport sector, exploit possible implications of United Kingdom, European Union or international law in trade and, in particular, in shipping, and further examine and analyse the interrelationships and correlations of the shipping and transport functions and areas to those of general business law. Moreover, the course is designed to equip shipping and transport professionals with the necessary skills to foresee and identify the possibility of the rise of a legal issue, to prevent it becoming, whenever possible, a legal problem and, for law practitioners, to handle in and out of courts claims related to shipping, marine insurance, carriage of goods, shipping finance and, in general, international trade and transport. Finally, the course focuses on the students’ ability to undertake legal research and work on their own while producing a major dissertation to a specified deadline.

The course aims to attract general law practitioners who wish to specialise into the shipping and transport industry. A trend that has currently been observed in the market for legal services asks that law practitioners further specialise in specific areas of particular key market interests. This, combined with the growing corporate demand for in-house company lawyers / law advisors, has produced a developing demand for maritime law specialised law practitioners.
The course could also address the needs of shipping studies graduates. Eventually, shipping market practitioners with no relevant academic background, but with a good working experience, could also be considered for acceptance to course entry.
Applicants must normally possess either a good Greek or overseas, UK Honours or equivalent law degree, at least a lower second class or above, or possess a non-law degree plus a relevant professional qualification or have substantial experience in the practice or teaching of law or shipping and transport.
Applications from students with no legal background wishing to study for the Certificate of Credit are welcome. Entry requirements will be considered in this case on an individual basis.
Where English is a second language, applicants may be required to prove proficiency in written and spoken English.
